Electric Leap Europe

Bringing partners together to speed up electric commercial air transport

Study

Aviation is the final frontier of sustainability. No other industry has more challenges in reaching climate neutral operation. Our research predicts that zero emissions short-distance commercial aviation is possible by 2025, by using battery-electric aeroplanes.

Battery-powered electric flight is one of several alternatives for emissions reduction in aviation. The industry mainly focuses on hydrogen fuel cell technology and Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). Although battery-electric flight is only viable on short distances, it is the most efficient variant of all alternatives and guarantees the best utilisation of scarce zero-emission resources.

Plan

We aim to offer efficient zero-emission flights as soon as viable. Electric Leap Europe develops a roadmap and a partnerships with the aim to raise investments and implement zero-emission commercial air transport by 2025.

  • Business plan
  • Technology selection
  • Investment fund
  • Technology certification
  • Network planning
  • Digital on demand service

Initially, on demand air taxi operations will allow zero-emission air travel between major european hubs and local aerodromes at up to 500Km range.

Act

Battery powered zero-emission aviation can service 20% of passenger kilometers (PKM) and once viable this should be implemented as soon as practicable.

Climate change leaves us no time to act and transition to efficient use of renewable energy. Flights that currently use fossil fuels or less efficient low-carbon fuel alternatives should be replaced by true zero-emission battery electric flight as soon as possible.

In the long term, battery powered flight can profit of major technological efficiency benefits, and will remain the most efficient option of air travel.

Best alternative

Batteries and electric drive trains enjoy the highest possible efficiency for flight. Over 80% of renewably generated power (wind/solar) is usefully converted, as compared to only 15% efficiency achievable using other low-emission alternatives.

This means that the same amount of wind and sun allow up to 5x more flights executed.

Incremental innovation

Safety is the most important concern. Relying on previously certified and proven aviation technologies, and building on years of experience in automotive markets, electric commercial transport is only years away while retaining the safety of matured aviation technology.

On-demand operations

Due to the small scale nature of early electric flight, we can leverage the highest possible flexibility in departure & arrival logistics. Automation and systems integration wil offer seamless & waitless transfer between the airplane and electric taxi for door-to-door travel.
